Booklet:
Badlands
– if you know that terrain you’ll understand my imaginery of
this music for, in many ways, the stark, dry quality of these
improvisations is equal to the arid contemplative beauty, a
lonely sense of humanity, an attempt to offer up something powerful
past the superficial. This music is distractive and it pulls
me to a further horizon of spirit which embraces both a universal
hope and a very individualistic and personal understanding and
thought.
If the impression for you is not of the Badlands, that matters
little, for it is reflective music which hopefully will reward
your dedicated listening. It does for me and it is for
you, I hope.

Putting
together "Expositions of Freedom...Now!" with Vattel
Cherry and Jeff Arnal was as spontaneous and complete as the
music. I first met Vattel while working with Cecil Taylor in
a large ensemble in 1995. Jeff Arnal manifested himself in 1999
while on tour with dancer Zack Fuller. Both Vattel and Jeff
have a contagious level of energy and virtuosity that made creating
this music a profound pleasure.
The
solo sax pieces on this CD are the most recent works of a project
that has been progressing for 25 years.
